Bladder cancer occurs in the body due to abnormal growth of the cells present in the inner lining of the bladder that ultimately split up and becomes out of control. As the disease grows, it tends to spread into the wall of the bladder and sometimes breaks off to travel to different parts of the body.
The bladder cancer treatment depends on the growth of the disease in the bladder layers and other intrusive factors. So, it is also crucial to check whether the disease has spread out of the bladder to determine the treatment.
The doctor asks the patient about their symptoms and takes general information, including family history and medical history, to get an idea of the condition. Then the doctor suggests undergoing some tests to diagnose the disease.
Urine Test: A urine sample is collected to examine the existence of abnormal cells, bacteria or blood.

Transurethral bladder tumor resection (TURBT): Under this procedure, the patient is given anesthesia before the surgery. The surgeon uses a cystoscope to insert into the bladder through the urethra. Then the tumor gets removed using a tool called fulguration. This procedure is best suitable for patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer to remove cancer.
Radical Cystectomy and Lymph Node Dissection: This procedure involves the removal of the entire bladder and nearby organs and tissues, including the prostate and part of the vagina, urethra, ovaries or fallopian tube. Pelvic lymph node dissection is a proper way to detect cancer spreading to the lymph nodes and thereby eliminating it.
Urinary diversion: Under this process, the doctor develops a new passage to pass urine out of the patient’s body. A small section of the intestine or colon is used to divert urine to the ostomy or stoma outside the body. A bag attached to the stoma collects urine and drains it outside the body of the patient.
Since the surgery is different for every patient, post-operative care is also different based on the type of surgery and condition of the patient.
