CRT-P stands for Cardiac resynchronization Treatment pacemaker and it makes use of a pacemaker to correct the normal or usual interval and pattern of heartbeat in patients with an irregular heartbeat. The process of correcting the normal heartbeat using a CRT-P or pacemaker is called biventricular pacing. The CRT-P not only corrects the coordination and timing between the atria and ventricle but also that between the right and left sides of the heart. It is used in heart failure patients. An electrocardiogram or EKG is the best way to diagnose heart failure and other additional blood tests can also be done to confirm the findings.
The process of CRT-P treatment is by implanting a pacemaker in the right and left chambers of the heart that coordinates the timing of the beat between the four chambers. Usually, CRT-P implantation is done through a minimally invasive procedure via the catheterization process. It is done by making a small incision on the chest and pushing a catheter through which the device is sent and implanted in the heart. Local anaesthesia is used during the surgery and sometimes general anaesthesia is also used in children or uncooperative patients. The process takes 3-5 hours at maximum. Patients are usually discharged between 4-6 days after CRT-P implant surgery.
A CRT-P implantation treatment has a success rate between 75 to 85% and varies from patient to patient. The best person to do CRT-P implantation is a cardiac surgeon. The CRT-P implant treatment in India costs above 11Lacs as the implant device is highly expensive.
Usually, the stitches are removed after 7-10 days and during the first week, the incision area has to be kept clean and dry so as to avoid infection as much as possible. Lifting the arm for the first 6 weeks is completely prohibited. Other activities like driving also require to be paused temporarily. The device is checked every 6 months to 1 year. The device’s battery lasts around 7-10 years at a stretch.
