An Electrophysiology Study is useful in detecting heart arrhythmias or irregular heart rhythm, which is a significant predictor of cardiac arrest. This diagnostic procedure is painless as it is done under conscious sedation however, a little discomfort may be felt by the patient due to an increase or decrease in the heartbeat. The procedure involves passing a flexible, thin wire through a vein in the upper thighs (or neck) which records the electrical signals of the heart. The wire provides minute electrical impulses to regulate the heartbeat along a specific rhythm.
The first line of treatment used for arrhythmia is Arterial Fibrillation Ablation. AF Ablation scars some heart tissues using catheters to block irregular electrical signals. The catheters are navigated into the heart through blood vessels.
Other options could be using a pacemaker, maze procedure, and coronary bypass surgery. The EPS study is a diagnostic procedure that can help your doctor to decide if you need a defibrillator or pacemaker. The study can take as less as an hour or go up to 4 hours or more if you have an AF Ablation. Following an EPS study, the patients are moved to a recovery area for 4-6 hours after which they are discharged on the same day if no further procedures are required.
