IVC Filter Insertion is the recommended line of treatment in patients suffering from VTE or venous thromboembolism, i.e., blood clots in the veins. It may also be required if anticoagulant therapy fails in the patient. An IVC filter traps large clots and prevents their entry into heart and lungs. A test for evaluating the clotting activity called the D-dimer test is athe most common method of diagnosing if a patient is suffering fro VTE. The IVC Filter is inserted through a tiny vein incision either in the neck region or in the groin through which a thin and flexible catheter is pushed in and gently moved to the inferior venacava. The catheter carries a collapsed IVC filter which is placed in the vein using fluoroscopy. Usually, the procedure takes only 30 minutes but may require some more time.
