Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) is a surgical process to remove all the abnormal cervical tissue that may cause cancer. The cervix is located at the vaginal top that opens the uterus. The LEEP procedure is usually performed in the doctor’s clinic or hospital.
Before the Surgery
The patient should avoid sex two days before the surgery. Plus, there should be no use of cream in and around the vagina. Also, avoid douching. The required medicines should be taken two hours before the procedure.
During the Surgery
The doctor will give certain medications to avoid any discomfort caused during the procedure. The patient needs to use the washroom to empty their bladder just before the test. There should be no trace of metal, including piercings, during the surgery. Remember to let the doctor or nurse be aware of the presence of any metal that is impossible to remove.
Next, the patient will be asked to cover with a paper sheet from the waist down after undressing for the procedure. A cold and sticky pad known as the grounding pad will be positioned on the thighs. During the procedure, the patient needs to lie down on the operational table and place their feet in the holders called stirrups present at the edge of the table.
A duckbill-shaped tool called a speculum will be kept in the opening of the vagina to see the inside of the vagina. The cervix will be cleaned using an iodine solution.
At this stage, the doctor will check the cervix with a colposcope. This big magnifying glass almost looks like binoculars on the stand. Local anaesthesia will be given to numb the cervix. After that, a wire loop will be placed inside the vagina to remove the abnormal tissues from this loop.
The patient will be discharged on the same day. However, they have to come for post-surgery routine checkups.
Common risks of the LEEP are as follows :
Do not insert anything that may cause bleeding, including tampons, sexual intercourse and touching for six weeks. This is to provide time to heal the vagina after the procedure.
