Ossiculoplasty is an ear surgical procedure that reconstructs the ossicles present within the middle ear. The patients suffer from a hearing loss condition called conductive hearing loss.
Generally, a patient with conductive hearing loss associated with the disruption of the ossicular chain undergoes an ossiculoplasty surgery. Through this surgery, the patient significantly improves communication, speech, social development and overall life quality.
Ossiculoplasty surgical procedure usually continues for 1 to 2 hours, depending on the age of the patient and the severity of the disorder.
To perform the entire procedure smoothly, the patient might be treated under IV sedation or local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. The surgeon monitors the facial nerves to prevent any damage to them. If general anaesthesia is administered to perform the surgery, a breathing tube will be used for easy breathing. The ear will be draped sterilely, after which the surgeon will perform the surgery using either the Transcanal approach or the Postauricular approach.
