Pediatric heart surgery is a medical procedure performed to treat or repair heart defects that are congenital (or the kids are born with the defect). These defects are most commonly diagnosed by Chest X-ray, Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), or an MRI of the heart. These can also be diagnosed by following symptoms like breathlessness, tongue/gums turning blue in colour, passing out, or palpitations in the child. Blood and urine tests are also good measures to confirm preliminary findings.
Pediatric Heart Surgery is most commonly done to treat diseases like VSD or ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, atrioventricular septal defect, aorta coarctation, and total anomalous pulmonary venous return. The pediatric heart surgery is performed under general anesthesia by creating an incision through the breastbone (sternum). Most babies who undergo an open-heart surgery for any disease usually requires to stay in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) up to 4 days after the procedure. Children, in most of the cases, stay in the normal hospital unit for around a week or more being released from the ICU. During this time, the babiy’s overall health and survival is monitored closely. The range of days they have to stay in the hospital ranges from 4-15 days depending on various other factors.
During release from the hospital, all neccessary guidelines regarding post-procedure care is given for the baby’s wellbeing. Usually, it is advised to not lift the child’s arms before 4 weeks. The cut or incision area has to be kept clean and dry at all times. Bathing should be done without submerging the incision area in water, preferably using sponging. Some other guidelines are also given that are specific to the kind of surgery performed. The baby should be held in a specific style to avoid complications.
