PTCA is also popularly known as Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty which is nothing but a procedure done to remove blockages in the coronary artery that in turn improves blood flow to the heart. Hence, it is one of the treatments for coronary artery disease or CAD. The procedure is minimally invasive as it involves creation of only a small incision and use of a catheter. Catheterization is done under anesthesia condition and the catheter inserted into the incision site is further used to insert a balloon inside the coronary artery. This balloon is pumped and pushed to remove the lipid deposits in the coronary artery in the procedure. The procedure takes about 1.5 hours but you may be in for longer hours depending on other complications present that may take some preparation time.
Coronary artery disease is usually diagnosed by electrocardiogram of the heart also known as EKG or ECG. Alternatively, angiogram procedure can be carried out using a contrast dye, which is also a minimally invasive procedure to detect any blockages in the coronary artery disease. Most commonly, this is the best practice followed for detecting a coronary artery blockage either in the left or right coronary artery.
Being a minimally invasive procedure, the process has a high success rate around 72-78%. Although there are some possible risks of the surgery like damage to inner organs or blood vessels by the catheter or balloon. But these incidences are very rare and if performed by an experienced cardiac surgeon, the risks are next to nil. The Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty treatment cost in India can be as low as 70000 and can go as high as 4.5 lacs.
Like any catheterization surgery, the patient has to stay in the hospital for only 1-2 days based on the health state. Most patients can go back home the next morning. The recovery time is 4-6 weeks. The post-op care is similar to any catheterization surgery and is given by the healthcare providers. The patient should not lift the arm for at least a week or so. Care of the incision site is the most important as it can lead to opportunistic infections. Information on how to dress the wound or bathe is given during discharge and has to be followed religiously. The incision site should be kept as dry as possible and not soaked in water while bathing. The dressing should be changed from time to time following the provider’s guidelines. The patient should not indulge in any high-intensity workout or exercises post the surgery for at least 4-6 weeks, I.e., before full recovery.
Any kind of cardiac surgery brings complications and life risk if not done by experienced hands which is why it is so important to have the best fleet of cardiac surgeons at bay. Dania Medicare Solutions is the best destination for heart surgeries because of their trustee fleet of experienced cardiac surgeons.
