A peripheral angiogram, similar to a renal angiogram, is an diagnostic imaging test to detect blockages and anomalies in the blood vessels, mainly arteries, that supply blood to your legs and feet or your arms and hands (or groin). The peripheral arteries are so called as they distribute blood away to the arms and legs from the heart. It is done in a similar way to renal angiogram. It is an imaging test to detect the anomaly in the blood vessel but is not a treatment for a disease. A peripheral angiogram is usually done in patients when the physician suspects there is a major circulatory blockage in one of more peripheral arteries or peripheral circulation.
The physician creates a small incision in the arms or legs through which a rubber sheath is inserted followed by a thin, flexible catheter into the blood vessel. The incision area is anesthesized using a local anesthetic agent at the site of incision. Sometimes, general anesthetic is used in case of children. Through the catheter, a special dye is used to visualize the insides of an artery – to detect any anomaly like enlargement or narrowing of the peripheral arteries. The special contrast dye contains iodine that helps visualize the artery through an X-ray imaging. After the procedure, the catheter and rubber sheath is removed and incision is closed.
A peripheral angiogram is a lengthy process than a cerebral or renal angiogram procedure and takes about 1-3 hours. Post the surgery, the patient is kept in the hospital for another 6 hours or sometimes overnight to monitor the site of incision and other body parameters like heart rate, breathing, etc. After discharge, the patient is asked to drink a lot of fluids mainly water to flush out the contrast dye out of the body.
