Peripheral Angioplasty is a procedure conducted in patients with PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease). PAD is most commonly diagnosed by conducting an ABI test, also called as Ankle-Brachial Index which compares your blood pressure in the arm to that in the ankle. Other additional tests that diagnose PAD are serum triglyceride levels, cholesterol levels, and diabetes.
Peripheral Angioplasty and stent placement are the first lines of treatment for Peripheral Artery Disease. Angioplasty is a minimally invasive medical procedure that involves the insertion of a small device in the shape of a “balloon” inside the artery through a small incision. This medical “balloon” is inflated that compresses the walls of the artery to widen the artery and allow blood flow. Stent placement uses a stent (or mesh of metal) that permanently widens the artery for proper blood flow.
