A renal angiogram is a diagnostic imaging test that visualizes the blood vessels present in the kidneys. This test is most commonly used by healthcare workers to visualize the enlargement of blood vessels in the kidney (aneurysm), narrowing or shrinking of blood vessels in the kidney (stenosis), or any blockages in renal blood vessels. A renal angiogram is also used to observe how good or bad the blood flow is to the kidneys. Hence, a renal angiogram is the main diagnostic test conducted in patients to confirm renal arterial aneurysms besides other renal diseases. However, it is not a treatment for anything. Most commonly, renal aneurysms are treated by open surgery or endovascular repair. A renal angiogram can only let one see the blood vessel anomalies present in the kidney.
The test procedure is quite simple. The physician will first insert a flexible, thin catheter into the artery bringing blood into your kidneys through an incision in your groin (or sometimes wrist). Local naesthesia is used over the incision area to numb pain sensations. In children, general anesthesia is also used commonly. Using that catheter, he/she injects an iodinated contrast or coloured dye into the artery that brings blood into your kidneys. Next, X-ray imaging is used to watch the dye’s flow path through the renal blood vessels to detect any anomaly in the blood vessels (like swelling/enlargement or narrowing). To prepare for a renal angiogram, the patient is asked to avoid food and drink for about 8 hours before the procedure.
The angiogram study will take only an hour or less, but the patient usually stays in the hospital for around 6 hours or sometimes overnight, for the healthcare team to monitor the patient’s blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. They also monitor the incision site where the catheter was inserted. The procedure is carried out in awake state as only local anesthetic is used over the incision area.
Renal angiogram as an imaging test has a success rate over 99% although sometimes renal angioplasty (surgical procedure) maybe performed along with the imaging test in which case the success rate is around 95%. A renal angiogram test costs in India can lie anywhere form 8000 to 2 Lac INR based on the location and multiple other health factors. On an average, be prepared to incur a cost of around 11000-15000 INR.
After a renal angiogram test, the patient is made to drink lots of fluid to flush out the iodinated test dye from his/her system. Once discharged, the providers brief the patient with neccessary instructions to care for the incision site which has to be followed. Post-procedure is a critical parameter to reduce side effects and infection at the site of infection. The patients should indulge only in light and non-strenous activities for the next 3-4 days and it’s safer to slowly resume strenuous activities after 2 weeks.
