Total Laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) is a medical procedure for removing the cervix and the uterus through surgery. The surgery is performed with the help of a small operating telescope known as a laparoscope. The Total Laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) is performed under general anaesthesia. A tiny plastic tube called a cannula is inserted using a needle into the tour vein to provide fluids and medications. Once the patient falls asleep, a catheter gets inserted into the bladder to drain urine.
The surgeon makes an abdominal incision of about 2 cm. Gas will be injected into the abdomen to make space for conducting the surgical procedure. Then the surgeon inserts the small device called the laparoscope into the abdominal wall. After that, the process moves on to remove the uterus and the cervix without making any large incisions.
The total procedure gets completed by suturing the top vaginal portion. The whole process may take around one to three hours.
Patients can get discharged from the hospital on the same day of surgery or the next day. In the case of Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH), total recovery takes around three to four weeks.
The recovery process will begin once the patient reaches their home. It is important to ask the doctor if bathing or taking a shower is allowed. In the case of dissolvable stitches, the patient can wash the cuts using mild soap and water. These stitches usually dissolve in 6 weeks. The use of creams and ointments around the incision area is important to get relief from itching. The daily activities should be resumed gradually.
